Elephants of the Pilanesberg

The elelphants of the Pilanesberg have had a traumatic and rather sad history. Transplants from other parks the youngsters that initially made up the elelphant population lacked adult supervision and grew up wild. The result, they started roughing up the local wildlife. Adult elephants were brought in to teach the youngsters manners a strategy that seems to have worked. The elelphent population again went through a traumatic period when fire swept through the park in 2005 killing a number of them.
The above shots were taken at a watering hold in late October 2009.
