Peggy's Cove and Peggy's Point Lighthouse

Its December the 28th, a big low moved in from the US yesterday shutting down New York and Boston, Halifax was relatively unaffected but the low and spring tides bring rough seas.  I have wanted to get out to Peggy's with a little bit weather.  The Atlantic gives rise to some fantastic storms but for the most part the seas off Peggy's are remarkably benign, when there is weather however it can be violent, big waves pulled someone off the rocks in September after Hurricane Earl passed through, you need to watch the waves and stay off the dark rocks.

Sunrise is at 7.50 Claudina and I grab a quick cup of coffee and put an extra dose of Java in travel mugs.  We get to Peggy's just before sunrise, a little late but better late than never.  The waves are pounding the coast.  Driving in to Peggy's Village we see the gulls sheltering int he harbour, its pretty cold with the wind.  We take some shots of the lighthouse, the light is bad and the wind gives the tripod a hard time while waiting for a long exposure, I decide to take a coupe of photographs in the harbour instead.  I grab a quick couple of shots, the seagulls add a nice touch to the pics it is a fishing village after all.  Its about 8.30, we still haven't seen anyone else one of the nice things about taking shots in the morning, you usually have the place to yourself.  I finish up taking a couple of shots in the water, gumboots are a good accessory to have when you shoot around water.

We move off towards the Swissair memorial to get another view of the lighthouse.  I have never been here before but it is wild, I don't really have a lens that I can use as I have a wide angle 17-40mm on the camera, no way am I changing lenses in this wind and spray.  I hike a little way to get to a good vantage point the waves are pounding this section of the coast fortunately the wind is blowing the spray away from me.  I try and find some strong foreground interest but know that the lighthouse is going to be tiny in the background.  Still I get a couple of shots that I like, its cold but I feel really good, the bad weather and big waves add a little zing to life, I head back to the car and finish my coffee before heading back to Halifax.  We are back home by 10am not a bad start to the day.
